One of the oldest printing methods still practiced in India, Block Printing is the art of hand-printing designs to fabric. We work with a family of master artisans in Bagru, India who's family has a 400 year-old lineage in the art.
THE ART OF BLOCK PRINTING
Block Printing
Our blocked fabrics are organic cotton and we use AZO- free dyes. Using hand blocking reduces our CO2 emissions to zero. We exercise fair-trade employment for our artisans in India.
THE PROCESS
Blocks are carved
The blocks are hand carved by master artisans, a process that takes 10 days.
The colors are mixed
The artisans mix AZO-free pigment until our desired color is met.
Fabric is prepared
Organic Khadi fabric is washed and laid out to dry before it is blocked.
The Fabric is Block Printed
Organic fabric is laid flat on a table and a block is dipped into dye, pressed firmly on the fabric, and then hit atop by hand. The process is repeated until the pattern has completely covered the length of the fabric.
